Each house has its own technology tree that you must master to conquer the inevitable invading forces. In Dune 2000, you're warring with the other houses over control of the spice mines, which, in typical real-time-strategy-game fashion, is the resource you must harvest to further your other causes, such as building the machines of war. Basically a port of the PC version, Dune 2000 is lackluster at best, because it is a port of a lackluster PC game. Each house has its own strengths and weaknesses, just like the GDI and the NOD, from C&C. You can select from the Atreides, Harkonnen, or the Ordos. In Dune 2000, you play as one of three rival "houses" from Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi book series. This was first and probably last (its hard to pass up on a Westwood game) trip to the Dune universe. For fans of Command and Conquer, Dune 2000 is the sequel to the real-time strategy game that started it all, Dune II. This game definitley needed more work as evident by the poor sales.

Plus you get Dune 2000 with this, though this wasn't rated very well and rightfully so. And last, the cut scenes are very well done, though the story and your mission don't make alot of sense. And the units and buildings have decent detail. Plus you have tornadoes that do some damage to your buildings, but can sweep away your infantry units rather quickly. In those orange areas where you can't build are sand worms that attack from time (although it seems like they spent alot of time destroying my spice harvesters all of the time) to time.

Not very pretty at all.īut not all is bad. Just a bunch orangish colored ground with a darker orange color that is the Spice you have to harvest and a bunch of brown areas where you can build. And the air units for any of the Houses stink. The Ordos have the best balance, but since the Harkonen can build up faster, the Ordos get run over. The Atreis have much stronger units and cost more, but they are so slow that smaller quicker units run circles around them before they can target. The Harkonen are pretty cool and have fast units at a decent price, but their turrets (which is typically a flame thrower) are not very good and get picked off by the simplest ranged attack units. I wanted to like this game because I am a huge C&C fan, but this games "Houses" are not well balanced. Visit my Amazon wish lists to see my 4-star and 5-star PC games: I'm glad to have this game in my collection, and I look forward to replaying it again the future.

They did a good job recreating the Dune Universe in this game.

Lots of movie details are included as part of the game for example, the Fremen Fedaykin can deploy a thumper, call a worm, and ride the worm around the sand for a while (for fun, or to take-out nearby enemies). The graphics, sound, dialog, and game play have held-up well over time. I replayed this game recently, and I thought it was still fun.

There is a patch for the game (version 1.09). It's an old game, so the servers probably don't exist anymore. When I tried multiplayer internet, the game went into a continuous loop with error message "error starting internet components, check installation is correct". Aside from the 3 main Houses, other characters are also featured in the game like Ix, Guild, Sardaukar, Fremen, Tleilaxu, etc. Although the maps are similar for each house/campaign, the cut scenes are different. For the single player campaign, you can pick what house you want to play as. There are 4 CDs: install, House Atreides, House Harkonnen, House Ordos. There is single player (campaign or skirmishes), or multiplayer (LAN or Internet). The campaign includes movie-like cut scenes, which are fairly well-done. While playing the game, it crashed several times, so I was careful to save my progress regularly during the campaign.
